So I've written about my seroma before.. probably more than anyone really wants to hear (including me). But I've also been doing some thinking about whether this blog should just be an entertainment blog or actually share some more personal things sometime and be more real. If you are reading this-- this is a baby step towards being more real because things really aren't always just fun and entertainment for me.
The doctors haven't drained the seroma since February with the hopes that the pressure building up would stop the fluids and then it would reabsorb. Nice theory. It has gotten bigger and bigger, to the point that I have to wear loose shirts, gathered shirts, or sweaters to try to hide the extra "boob" like growth on my abdomen. Last time I went in, the question arose about whether it might be a hernia or not and the doctor recommended a CT scan. Apparently, if it is a hernia than draining it is the wrong thing to do...
With all the traveling, I wasn't able to do the CT scan until this morning. Didn't have to drink the icky contrast for the scan- Yea! Had the IV fluid though that has other somewhat nasty side effects that I won't go into but it still isn't as bad as the stuff you drink. Anyway, the radiologist was nice enough to read it right away and tell me that it didn't look like a hernia. So, I called the doctor in SLC to see if I could get the thing drained because it has gotten enormous and the skin and everything was so stretched out that it was hurting a lot.
They got me in right away and drained the beast! My stomach actually looked much flatter (for a bit) and it certainly felt better (except for where the needle poke was). For those into really gross details, they drained over 380 cc's of fluid. I think it is cc's... anyway it is a metric measure and was probably double what they had ever drained before from me. The PA took a picture of the thing so that she could show the doctor just how big it was. I saw the picture too and it really did look pretty horrendous. Good thing it was drained today-- I was starting to get worried that the whole thing would implode and take out all of Utah County. Crisis averted.
Stopped briefly for lunch because I hadn't eaten since last night because of the CT scan and noticed that the beast is starting to fill up again. Sigh... That's what has happened before too. The PA has a plan though that she wants to talk about with the doctor about something that might help. I have an appointment in 2 weeks. I'll be praying that this thing doesn't fill up too fast or get quite as big as it was. Any other prayers to that effect will be greatly appreciated. It is still hurting from the needle so I took a nap with a heating pad on it. Not sure if that helped or not.
So, enough medical stuff. I'll have to do something fun tomorrow so that I can post about that! Luckily, I have tickets to see Mamma Mia in Salt Lake plus I had a package delivered today and am going to open it up right now... I know it is clothes... but I have been going a bit crazy with online ordering again and so I'm not sure what is inside. Just like a kid at Christmas!

I'm glad you shared this Lisa. I am having a terrible, awful, horrible day and your humor cheered me up. I'll be praying for you. Have fun at Mamma Mia.
ReplyDeleteHope you get feeling better. I just love when packages start coming. It always makes me smile...unless I have to make a return!
ReplyDeleteI am sorry you have been having so many health problems but impressed by your ability to face them head on and with such humor. I love reading your blogs!! Maria
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize it was so big, you played it down pretty well :). I hope they get it figured out and fixed so all is well for the cruise.
ReplyDeleteI hope they figure it out soon too! How annoying for you. With all the medical advances, you would think they would be able to tame your beast.
