It's been a LONG time since I did a restaurant review-- but it is definitely time. I went with a group of friends to Mountain West Burrito clear back in April... and I have been there at least 1-2 times a week ever since. It is that good!
Figured that I ought to write about it since I've been at least 6-8 times and eventually I'll need to try someplace else. Located on State Street in Provo (as you are heading up the Orem hill) right across the street from Chevron and Crestwood apartments. Maybe a little easy to miss since it is part of one of those convenience stores/gas stations/restaurant deals... except the gas pumps are closed which allows for more parking.
If you know how to "check in" on Facebook, you can do that and get free chips and salsa. I haven't figured out how to do that yet (maybe you need an iPhone?) so no free chips and salsa for me! Instead, I have gotten the guacamole and chips several times and the guacamole is to die for. It tastes like the kind you get in Mexico where they mash it all up at your table and has that fresh, more chunky avocado flavor. Yum!! Plus their chips are really good too, lighter than the corn tortilla chips that you get in most places that taste like they came out of a bag. I've found that I like them best with a little salt added, not sure that they salt them for you which is probably a good thing since tastes vary so much.
So far, I have tried the quesadillas (several times), a burrito, and the nachos. My favorite has been the half and half quesadillas with roasted vegetables and pork carnitas, with guacamole and sour cream on the side of course. The half/half combos aren't really half and half--more just a way to make your own combinations. Besides the pork, there is chicken, beef, S & M (I asked once what that was and got some laughs from people but I don't remember the answer...). There are vegan options as well and prices range from about $3 for a taco to $14 or so for the large burrito. Believe them when they say large-- I've seen one and it was enormous! I had the regular burrito once and split it in half for two meals and it really should have been three. Excellent though!
One of the hallmarks of the restaurant is that everything is fresh and that they don't even own a can opener. I believe it... everything I have had has been really really good. There are signs up to tell you more about the beef and chicken--it's free range, fed from the hands of little children, tucked into bed by kind farmers.. etc... I'm convinced that you can tell a difference when meat is more organically grown. Besides awesome food, the owner of the restaurant is extremely easy on the eyes... I assume that he is the owner-- he's been there serving every time that I have gone... Not that I would choose a restaurant for that reason alone, but how can it hurt?
If you haven't guessed, I would give Mountain West Burrito a 5-Star rating. I've taken at least 15-20 people there already and I expect it will probably get busier and busier. Try it out when you have the chance-- It is that good! One warning though- the green sauce that is served with the food may look like it could be guacamole at first glance but it is HOT sauce, EXTREMELY hot sauce. One of my managers slathered it on his food and almost died eating it... and then he did it again the next time we went... The owner took pity on him the second time and brought him out another burrito. Don't say that I didn't warn you... The regular salsa is excellent--the perfect combination of heat and flavor.
