You can never get lost in Utah County because you will always know when you are heading South-- scones will start appearing on menus at restaurants more frequently and the scones will get bigger and bigger and bigger the farther south you go... And you will definitely find scones on the menu at the Wild Flower Grill on Main Street in Payson and luckily they are only about plate size, not table size! I first went there with a few people from work after a meeting at the hospital and had a chicken fried steak that was incredible... I wasn't expecting it to be that good so I didn't take pictures at the time. Also, it's a bit awkward taking pictures when you are out with people from work. My friends understand the whole blogging thing and like to have some of their comments incorporated into whatever I write. My work friends might too-- I've never asked them... Anyway, I went back a second time but didn't order the chicken fried steak and so I had to go back a THIRD time and order it and get pictures.
So what does the world's best Chicken Fried Steak look like? Take a look... The steak itself is enormous and the meat is a lot thicker than you sometimes get, yet it is tender enough that you can cut it with your fork. On top of the steak there are MOUNDS of mashed potatoes and gravy with two buttered scones off to the side. This is definitely not a one meal dinner; I brought some home tonight and it might provide dinners thru the weekend. If you want this, make sure you order "the lulu". I tried ordering a chicken fried steak tonight and realized I was ordering wrong when the server asked me what salad dressing I wanted. I didn't think it came with salad since I hadn't gotten it before and quickly realized my mistake. Ordering the chicken fried steak will get you an open-face sandwich-- which is probably still pretty good but not what I intended.
Kim ordered the seafood basket which was the special tonight. The cheese bread could almost be described as an open faced grilled cheese sandwich. The fish and fries were good, but not much different than you get at other places. Same with the Navajo taco I had last week-- good, but doesn't stand out as the best one ever like the chicken fried steak does. We saw a burger and onion rings walking past us (being served, not really walking by on their own...) and they looked pretty awesome-- especially the onion rings. Great big, thick onion rings and you could smell them as they went by. In our quest for the perfect burger, we may need to go back there and order a burger to check them out. The Wild Flower Grill also has a long list of shake flavors although we haven't tried them yet. Gotta save some things for another time....
Wild Flower Grill also has the best ice-- the soft, crushed kind that you don't break your teeth on. I've only found one other restaurant that serves that kind of ice and it keeps me coming back there too. And, even though the serve-it-yourself fountain has Coke products, Pepsi is also available in the back behind the counter. Have to protect the good stuff! Don't you feel in the know now-- kind of like knowing to order a burger "animal style" at In-N-Out burger?
So, as far as a rating goes.. for the chicken fried steak, I would give the Wild Flower Grill a 5-Star rating ! For their other items, maybe more of a 3-Plus Star rating--definitely good, but not what you would dream about and crave at night. And, I am excited to go back and check out their burgers and onion rings sometime..maybe tomorrow...?
The Wild Flower Grill is conveniently located next to a tattoo and body-piercing shop so you can get all of your needs met at once. We discussed getting wild flower tattoos to commemorate the occasion... So did we do it? Most of you will never know....

ReplyDeleteI am laughing about what you said about the scones! It's so true! I know, I'm from Payson. I love the fries at Wildflower.
