For years, I have heard about the famous pickle pie at a cafe in Bicknell. I remember driving by once many years ago, but it was closed so we weren't able to stop. Sunglow Cafe is a family restaurant attached to a motel that serves burgers, sandwiches--cafe food-- besides their famous selection of pies. Sometimes when you stop at a local place you really strike gold and find some great food... not so much the case with the Sunglow... although in their defense it isn't quite the tourist season and there was a "help wanted" sign in the window for a new cook. The service though was really friendly and they did serve Pepsi.
I ordered the chicken fried steak and might have liked it better if I hadn't just had the best chicken fried steak ever in Payson. The homemade chicken noodle soup was good and the steak itself was acceptable. The corn was inedible and tasted like it had a LOT of salt in it.. maybe the whole salt shaker. Kim had the last serving of halibut (I tried to order it too but there was just one serving left) and it was cooked with some strange chili sauce on it. I think I got a little lucky!
Can't go to the Sunglow without trying the pies since that is their claim to fame. I ordered the Pie Sampler (since I couldn't decide) and it came with a 1/2 slice of oatmeal pie, pickle pie, buttermilk pie, and pinto bean pie. My favorites were the buttermilk pie and the oatmeal pie. Not the best pies ever, but they were ok. I had a few bites of the pickle and pinto bean pies just to say that I tried them. The pickle pie didn't really taste like pickles (probably a good thing) and I couldn't quite decide what it did taste like. It did have a funny, almost green-ish tinge to it... I'll leave it to you to decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
On my restaurant rating scale, I would probably give it a 2-Star rating. I doubt that I would go out of my way 150 miles to get there again... but if I was traveling with friends and they wanted to go, I'd give it another try.
